Some overseas schools do interview applicants before offering admission while some does not.
Interview is a must for the completion of application review in some schools, while some schools do not see the need for Interview. The reason why some schools conduct interview for applicants are as follows:
(1) To be able to determine applicants boldness, preparedness for the study program;
(2) The interview is a means by which the school get to hear and know the applicant's sole purpose of wanting to do the program;
(3) The level of language proficiency of the applicant can be determined during the interview;
The virtual interview will help the confirm the level of proficiency in the use of virtual applications like google meet, zoom etc., because these are also very important means of instruction in the schools;
(4) To confirm to the admission team that the applicant's presentation in the application essay is genuine and not a mere academic compilation, as the student will be interviewed to confirm that the essay is originally written by him;
(5) Interview serves as an avenue for allowing the applicant ask questions about the school, the program and other issues relating to the application.
The reasons why some other schools believed that interview is not necessary for admission decision are as follows:
(1) The applicant has been given the opportunity to pass across his/her message in the applicant essay, so the interview is not considered necessary;
(2) Some schools have a very tight schedule to the extent that the time required for interview will slow down the whole admission process;
(3) The numbers of applicants in some schools are very high, making one on one interview an impossible and a fruitless exercise;
(4) Some school believed in shortlisting and admitting only outstanding applicants (i.e. those with GPA higher than 3.0/3.3 and above and Standardized Test Scores that are very high), considered to be well baked for a high level of expected performance;
CONCLUSIVELY, from the above details, I will advise that applicant should be prepared for interview if he/she has applied to those school that considers Interview as a must. The admission requirements of the school you are applying to, should be well searched and listed out to be able to make adequate preparation for interview (if applicable).
