If you are applying to the United States (I am using this example because I studied there), remember they look at your extracurricular activities, your essays, your grades, your standardized test results, your background, your recommendation letters, etc. In other words, the application process is holistic. As such, you need to make sure that all aspects of the application are as good as they can possibly be.
Write great essays, score as highly as you can on the SAT or GRE, get the best recommendation letters, build a strong profile of extracurricular activities, etc. In this way, you will have the best chance of getting into your dream university.
